3 must see spots this Winter.
The winter months are a time when motivation is low, and we are more likely to be glued to the couch, rather than explore new places, and experiences. If you can muster the strength, here are 3 places to consider:
New Germany State Park
Right after a snow storm, there are few places more beautiful than hiking around the lake at New Germany. With the puffs of snow hanging low on the trees, groomed trails for those who want to XC ski or snowshoe (rentals available at the park), and a picturesque view of the lush pines, you will be glad to drink of the quiet magical scenery.
Pro Tip: Behind the parking lot is a sledding hill that you and the kids will love.
Whitegrass Cross Country Center
Dont let the “cross country” label in the name dissuade you, there is something for everyone here. Located in Canaan Valley, WV, just the drive there is worth it.
On Corridor H, you get to experience the snow covered landscape from a high ridge, watch the coal mining operations, and are liable to sight an Eagle or some sort of raptor.
Whitegrass is like stepping back in time, with the affable host Chip and the smell of great soup in the air.
You can rent everything from snowshoes to Telemark skis. You can explore the flats made of farmed snow, or head to the summit where you can see both Timberline, and Canaan valley ski resorts.
Pro Tip: Stop by Blackwater falls and check out the frozen falls as well as the oldest sledding hill in WV.
Pro Pro Tip: There a re huts in Whitegrass, you are liable to find bottles of Moonshine in the Ammo containers in the huts, just be noce and leave something in return.
Harrington Manor State Park
Just outside Oakland, MD, you are in the westernmost county of our wonderful state. this park is another winter wonderland, with opportunities for hiking, snowshoeing, XC skiing, and get this – Fat biking. You are able to rent fat bikes and enjoy the snow packed trails, no matter your riding ability. This is definitely a picturesque way to enjoy a winter day.
Pro Tip: Swing down to McHenry for lunch at Brenda’s Pizza, or Firewater restaurant.
