A Trail Tale (Mandela’s muses).
Many moons ago, when I first moved to Cumberland, MD, I remember my ever-present undercurrent of disappointment with my lot in life. How did I end up in a rural mountain town, without even a Starbucks (there is one now).
Interestingly, Yesterday, I went on a gravel bike ride In Green Ridge State Forest. I rode for about 40 miles and saw less than 10 people.
The weather was glorious, and I was overcome with gratitude for the gift of where I find myself.
It is a balance clinging so tightly to solitude that one becomes close-minded, but there is no denying the power of hearing your heart, sans the noise of the outside world.

Planning a Spring Adventure.
As spring blooms around us, it’s time to gear up for unforgettable adventures in Western Maryland’s breathtaking landscapes. Whether you’re a seasoned explorer or a newbie nature lover, planning your outdoor trip requires a mix of preparation and excitement. Here are key points to ensure your trip is nothing short of amazing:
-
Choose Your Destination Wisely: Western Maryland is a treasure trove of outdoor wonders, from the rugged trails of the Appalachian Mountains to the serene beauty of Deep Creek Lake. Research and select a destination that matches your interests and skill level, it does not always have to be hardcore, consider, our guided hikes, or kayak trips.
-
Pack the Essentials: Don’t forget the essentials! A sturdy tent, sleeping bag, cooking gear, and appropriate clothing layers are a must. Remember to pack light but smart, prioritizing items based on the activities you have planned. For this reason, consider buying quality.
-
Check the Weather: Spring weather can be unpredictable, as you can see: some around us received a few inches of snow last week. Keep an eye on the forecast and prepare for sudden changes. Waterproof gear, extra layers, and a reliable weather app can be your best companions.
-
Safety First: Safety should always be a priority. Pack a first aid kit, familiarize yourself with the area’s wildlife and potential hazards, and share your itinerary with a trusted friend or family member.
-
Leave No Trace: Respect nature and leave no trace of your visit. Follow the principles of Leave No Trace to preserve the beauty of Western Maryland’s outdoor spaces for generations to come.
-
Embrace the Experience: Finally, embrace the experience wholeheartedly. Disconnect from the hustle and bustle of daily life, immerse yourself in nature’s wonders, and create memories that will last a lifetime, somethings will not work out as planned – that’s ok. Our number one rule, We dont leave somewhere if we are having fun, just to keep up with the planned itinerary.
