Most times, we outdoorsy folk drool over the big things, shinny new wheels for our bikes, the latest AT bindings, the lightest and most technical backpack or that 2 person tent that only weighs 2lbs (if you have no idea what any of that is, it’s all good, you’re in the right place).
We, however, very often overlook the little things that make the biggest difference in our going and staying outside. One of the biggest opportunities for optimized enjoyment are your socks. Yup! your socks! most people still wear cotton socks to go outside, be it for hiking, running or even biking. Cotton socks are the norm, and fairly inexpensive, they however lack the features needed to withstand the rigors out outdoor living. Great quality wool socks like those made by Smartwool make a huge difference in persorman and comfort in exploring outside.
Unlike cotton socks, merino wool socks are made with a much higher quality and added compression for improved blood flow and support. In the Spring, where it it’s possible to encounter wet weather or trails, these socks are able to absorb about 30% of their weight and still keep you warm. Wool socks also have great wicking properties, so if like us you have sweaty feet, they don’t feel wet as you slog up the trail with your overstuffed pack. Speaking of stinky feet, wool socks have antimicrobial properties, so they can be worn longer between washes and dry much faster.
The point is, your socks matters. The best gear are those that disappear while doing their jobs. A great merino sock will stays in place, keeps you dry and warm, and you don’t even know it’s there! socks matter around here, get you some wool.
