Some quick thoughts for your week:

Let’s switch it up a bit

Mandela’s Muses.

Yesterday, I was almost blown off the road by those wild, restless winds typical of early November. The gusts tore through the valley, sweeping away the last ambers of color that clung to tree branches in quiet defiance, Nature’s way of reminding us that every season must give way to the next. In their place now stand the gray, bare trees of late Fall – solemn, honest, and tired. The phones have quieted too, inquiries for bikes and bodies to be ferried across the gems we call the GAP and C&O Trails deferred till after the new year. It’s as if the land itself is taking a breath.

Wheelzup began as a one-man shuttle company back in 2018, driven by a simple dream: to help people touch wonder through motion. This year, in 2025, that dream carried 598 groups and approximately 1,300 souls—along those same storied paths. Behind every trip was a story: friends chasing a lifelong goal, families discovering the joy of shared miles, and solo riders finding peace in the rhythm of their wheels.

As we move into the season of Thanksgiving, I am filled with gratitude, for every conversation on those rides, every smile during a rental fitting, every laugh shared while choosing the right trail gear. Through these simple, human interactions, we are reminded that we’re not so different after all. We all want the same things: to live a full life, to be seen, and to be loved.

Now, as winter settles in and the trails grow quiet, I know we’ll hear less from many of you until the thaw. But I want you to know this—I’m deeply thankful for you. For trusting us with your journeys, for letting us be a small part of your memories. And while potato-chip-sized snowflakes fall from the heavens and I carve turns down a distant mountain, I’ll be thinking of you—the community that keeps these wheels spinning, season after season.

As the temperatures drop and the wind starts to bite, outdoor adventures don’t have to end they just require a little more strategy. Whether you’re commuting on two wheels, hiking a frosty trail, or squeezing in one last weekend ride before winter fully settles in, here are five tried-and-true ways to stay warm, safe, and ready for whatever the cold throws at you.:

1. Layer Smart, Not Heavy
The secret to staying warm isn’t bulk it’s balance. Start with a moisture-wicking base layer to keep sweat off your skin, add an insulating mid-layer for warmth, and finish with a windproof or waterproof shell. Avoid cotton it traps moisture and chills you fast. Shop pick: Smartwool Lightweight baselayer.

2. Protect Your Extremities

Cold hands, feet, and ears can end an adventure fast. Invest in quality gloves, wool socks, and a thermal beanie that fits under your helmet. If you’re cycling, consider windproof shoe covers and handlebar mitts. A little protection goes a long way. Shop Pick: Patagonia Better Sweater Beanie

3. Keep Moving
Stillness is the enemy of warmth. If you start to feel chilled, keep your body in motion even small movements like shoulder rolls or leg swings help maintain circulation. On group rides or hikes, plan short, active breaks rather than long, cold rests.

4. Manage Moisture and Fuel Up
Cold-weather sweat can be sneaky. Vent zippers before you overheat, and stay ahead on hydration yes, even in winter. Snack regularly; your body burns more calories just to stay warm. Think nuts, jerky, or energy bars that don’t turn into bricks in the cold.

5. Respect The Conditions

The trail, the wind, and the temperature all change faster this time of year. Check forecasts and sunset times, carry lights, and pack an emergency layer or space blanket. Know when to push and when to turn back. The goal is to thrive, not just survive.

Winter rewards those who prepare. The quiet, crisp air and frozen stillness can make every mile feel sacred. Gear up, get out there, and remember—the right preparation keeps the adventure alive all season long.
