All bikes are equipped with rear racks (you can rent a set of panniers), handlebar bag, bell, light, and a repair kit (spare tube, tire levers, pump, and patch kit).

Choosing the Right Bicycle for Your Multi-Day Adventure on the Great Allegheny Passage and C&O Canal Towpath

Planning a multi-day adventure on the Great Allegheny Passage (GAP) or/and the C&O Canal Towpath is an exciting endeavor. This journey offers over 330 miles of scenic beauty, historic sites, and varied terrain from Pittsburgh, PA to Washington, D.C. The right bicycle can make or break your experience, so it’s crucial to choose wisely.

What types of bikes do you rent?

At Wheelzup, we offers Trek rentals bikes. Trek is one of the top bicycle companies, and is well know for its, quality build, comfort and dependability . We offer various models of bikes depending on the customer needs and duration. 

For Day use, we have the Trek Verve, Verve 2+, Electra Townie and Townie+.

For longer rentals, We have the Hybrid -Verve, Gravel - Checkpoint, Ebike - Verve 2+. 

What is the size range for your bikes?

The bikes range from size XS to XL, in some models, we have from 49cm, to 61cm. We also have some models in a Step through, or low step set up.

What comes on the bike?

The bike comes with a handlebar bag containing a front light, patch and repair hit. Bottle cages are already installed (no water bottle supplied). 

Bikes will also have racks installed, panniers can be rented at a daily or weekly rate. In some cases, a single pannier with bike charger will be included.

Can I pick up a rental bike in Pittsburgh and drop it off in DC?

Wheelzup id conviniently located in Cumberland, the middle of the trail system. However, you can rent a bike and have it ready at either ends of the Trail - Pittsburgh or DC. 

There is a $250 (2 bikes, $50 for every additional bike) charge for this service. Pick up and drop off locations are conviniently located less than a 3 mins walk from the trail.

 

Do you supply different types of pedals?

All bikes come with a regular pedal, customers can bring their preferred pedal and we can install it on the bicycle for them at no additional charge.

Can I bring my own saddle?

Albsolutely, we can swap out your saddle.

Be aware if you bring your saddle, to just bring the saddle and not seatpost, it is possible your seatpost could be of a different diameter than our bikes.

Do you rent pannier?

Yes, we do!

All rentals come with one pannier, and all our bikes have rear racks, so you can attach your own panniers if you bring them.

What is the size of your pannier?

We rent the Ortlieb Back-Roller Classic. the capacity is 20L per bag, giving a combined capacity of 40L if you rent a set.

What happens if I have a mechanical problem?

All bikes come equipped with an emergency kit for basic repairs.

In most cases, people are able to manage and get to the next town or place for help. However, if that is not possible, if you contact the shop, we will either send help from one of our many partners along the trail, or come and find you and provide a replacement bike for you fo continue on your adventure.

Do you rent outdoor equipment?

At Wheelzup, we have an extensive assortment of backpacking equipment, with Osprey and Mountain smith backpacks, to tents, stoves, sleeping pads and more. We also rent other items like bicycle racks and cargo boxes.

Do you have parking at your shop?

There long and short term parking within 45 seconds walk to the Canal place location. Both locations are currently free and safe.

Short term parking

13 Canal Street, Cumberland MD 21502 (Opposite the train station)

 Long Term Parking

15 Howard Street, Cumberland MD 21502 (Under the interstate bridge, opposite the shop).

What is your Shuttle cancelation policy?

We have a $50 nonrefundable reservation fee for every reservation. 

If you cancel up to 5 days before your scheduled ride, you will receive the entire payment back (minus reservation fee). If you cancel 5 days or less after scheduled shuttle, you get the 50% back.

Example: You schedule a shuttle to Pittsburgh on the 15th of June, and pay $320. If you cancel on or before the 10th of June, you will be refunded $270. If you cancel after the 10th, you would be refunded $160.

We reserve the right to change this policy, contact the shop for more information.

Where do we pick up and drop off the bikes?

The place to pick up and drop off bicycles and equipment is at the shop at Canal place, however, we are flexible and happy to work with  customers at their Air BNB, hotel room or a different location.

It is however imperative that you are fitted properly before embarking on your adventures so, make sure  that this is arranged with us and confirm this when you receive your reservation notice.

Tell me about your season pass?

The season pass is focused on day use rentals. For a very low price, customers get an unlimited amount of usage of our bikes and watersport equipmnet (Rocky Gap location) for a 12month period. 

Customers also get 5 guest 2 hour passes and a discount on all our paid events for the validity period of their pass.
