Some quick thoughts for your week:

“You never know what worse luck your bad luck has saved you from.”
Cormac McCarthy – No Country for Old Men.

Mandela’s muses.

Very recently, I have been contemplating the position we hold as the 3rd Black-owned Specialty Ourdoor retailer in America. As some know, it is something we are both proud of, and nonchalant about – It doesn’t matter what position you are if you are not here in 5 or 10 years.
Never the less, I have been contemplating what it means to be “Specialty Retail”. if we sell the high dollar brands (mostly at a discount), but make more of our money on Cumberland merch, or if we make more money from fixing flats, and selling water bottle cages, than selling actual bicycles, are we truly an outdoor store?

Some people who have done this longer than I have answered me this way: If you care about the people, about the community, about the cause, beyond just transactional, then you are in specialty retail.

Also, you are what your customers permit you to sell to them. So bare that in mind – we are what with your wallet you tell us you want us to be.

Planning a Thru-Ride on the Great Allegheny Passage and C&O Canal Trail: 5 Essential Tips

The GAP and Towpath constantly ranks as one of the best rail-trail systems in the country, with visitors from around the world. It qualifies as a bucket list endeavor for any bike loving individual, especially if you live within a reasonable distance of it. Here are some valuable tips to checking this off the list:

1. Route and Distance

The combined Great Allegheny Passage (GAP) and Chesapeake & Ohio (C&O) Canal Towpath trail covers approximately 335 miles from Pittsburgh, PA, to Washington, D.C. Understanding the route, major landmarks, and potential stopping points is crucial for effective planning. Make sure to map out your daily distances and accommodations along the way to ensure a smooth journey.

2. Gear and Equipment

A successful thru-ride requires reliable gear. Invest in a quality touring bike or a sturdy hybrid that can handle both the crushed limestone of the GAP and the packed dirt of the C&O trail. Essential gear includes:

  • Panniers or bikepacking bags for carrying supplies
  • A repair kit with spare tubes, tire levers, a pump, and multi-tool
  • Comfortable and weather-appropriate clothing, including rain gear
  • A helmet, gloves, and padded cycling shorts for comfort and safety
All of which are available for rent in your friendly neighborhood outdoor shop!

3. Food and Water

There are stretches of the trail with limited access to food and water, so it’s important to plan your supplies accordingly. Pack enough snacks and meals to keep your energy up, and be aware of the locations of towns and services along the trail. A portable water filter can be handy for refilling from natural sources or pumps along the C&O section, where amenities might be sparser.

4. Camping and Lodging

Both trails offer various camping and lodging options. The GAP has established campgrounds, hostels, and B&Bs, while the C&O trail features hiker-biker campsites roughly every 5-7 miles, which are free and first-come, first-served. Make reservations in advance where possible, especially during peak seasons, and have a backup plan in case your preferred spots are full.

5. Trail Conditions and Weather

Be prepared for varying trail conditions and weather patterns. The GAP is generally well-maintained with a smoother surface, while the C&O can be muddy and uneven in spots, especially after rain. Check the weather forecast regularly and be ready for changing conditions. Pack layers, sun protection, and a waterproof cover for your gear. Being adaptable to weather changes can significantly enhance your ride experience.

Final Tip

Always let someone know your itinerary and expected arrival times at key points along the trail. Safety is paramount, and having someone aware of your plans adds an extra layer of security. Enjoy your adventure on these historic and scenic trails! You should consider purchasing the official trail guide, this will answer a lot of your questions.
