Some quick thoughts for your week:

“Every bit of learning is a little death. Every bit of new information challenges a previous conception, forcing it to dissolve into chaos before it can be reborn as something better. Sometimes such deaths virtually destroy us.”

A Trail Tale (Mandela’s muses).

Many years ago, when first getting into mountain biking, in my excitement, I decided to go to a trail system in Germantown, MD area.
I had ridden about 4 miles and at the last trail fork, decided to take one the more downhill run. A few minutes into this, I realized I was still going downhill, which meant I would have to climb back up. That was not an option, I was already spent and out of water. In my panic to escape this situation, I took so many turns I got lost.

I popped out on the nearest road and through my phone realized I was 6 miles from my car. I was desperate. i actually considered calling my wife who was 2 hrs away.  I had a great idea – I called a taxi, I told them I would need a ride for myself and my bike, they refused. I rode for about a mile, but was pooped, so guess what I did? I called 911. I told them I was having heat exhaustion – they asked if I needed an ambulance, to which I said No (realizing the cost). Yes, I was one of those people. I am sure they saved this conversation for every new recruit. They said they would send a Tropper who never came.

After sitting in the shade for about an hour, I realized from the map that an overpass shortened the trip considerable, so I was one of those people lugging a heavy bike at the side of the road, climbing onto the bridge and riding to my car. I still am traumatized by that day.
I would love to share your trail tales – send me some here.

3 Must Dos For Every Outdoor Enthusiast In Spring
I am not sure if you had a winter where you are or not, truth be told, I am not sure we did! The challange is: Do we bring product in for Spring or wait a little bit to be sure we don’t get blindsided by another winter storm. Alas, I digress…

For outdoor enthusiasts, spring offers exciting opportunities to reconnect with nature. Here are three essential activities to make the most of the season:

Gear Check and Maintenance: Before diving into outdoor adventures, thoroughly inspect and maintain your gear. Clean, repair, and re-waterproof equipment as necessary to ensure everything is in top condition for safe and enjoyable outings. Also, carefully put away winter gear – storage wax on skis, wash, dry and store winter apparel in a dry place.

Explore New Trails or Locations: Spring brings fresh growth and vibrant landscapes, making it the perfect time to explore new trails or outdoor destinations. Whether it’s hiking, biking, or camping, venture into unfamiliar territory to discover hidden gems and broaden your outdoor experience. Tools like the All Trail app, Strava, and even the Wheelzup Adventure Handbook can help with that!

Participate in Conservation Efforts: Spring is also a time for environmental stewardship. Get involved in conservation activities such as trail cleanups, tree planting, or wildlife monitoring. Even if you are not a Climate Change advocate, contributing to the preservation of natural spaces ensures their beauty and accessibility for future generations of outdoor enthusiasts.

Commit to Inviting Someone Outside: Growing the level of diversity in the outdoors is something that is important to us. We also believe no level of laws, policies, or corporate pretense can achieve this. The most effective solution is if we (you) as individuals invite and make it possible for someone who would otherwise have never thought of go hiking, fishing, skiing, biking etc. Imagine if every outdoor person you know invites just one person to go experience the outdoors. There in lies the power of Access, Knowledge and Community.
