Mandela’s Muses. Lately I’ve been thinking about suffering.
I know – typical Mandela fashion to come swinging out of the gate. I’ve come to the conclusion that I both love and hate it. On one hand, I find myself in a losing battle to evade it, outrun it, even transcend it. But on the other hand, I recognize that I sometimes welcome it. Suffering has a strange way of giving things meaning. It sharpens me, toughens me. It reminds us that we can do hard things. But navigating suffering is exhausting – a lot like navigating the last few weeks of winter.
The good news is that a quote by James Clear recently cut through the maze of thoughts in my head: “When you need clarity, subtract.”
Spring is almost here, and that feels like the right mindset. This is the season for subtraction – spring cleaning, both physical and emotional. Clearing space. Letting a little light back in. Because sometimes the best way to face life’s suffering isn’t to outrun it.
Sometimes, it’s simply to make room for what matters.
