Essential packing tips for bikepackers, backpackers, and anyone chasing adventure on the trail—or beyond.
Whether you’re heading out for a multi-day ride on the GAP, trekking through the backcountry, or setting off on a weekend camping trip, one thing’s true across all adventures: how you pack shapes how you experience the journey. Too much gear and you’re dragging weight you don’t need. Too little, and you risk being underprepared. The key? Learn to pack light and right.
Start with the Must-Haves.
No matter the adventure, here’s a foundational checklist:
- Navigation & communication – trail map, downloaded GPS route, charged phone
- Hydration – bottles or hydration bladder (aim for at least 2–3 liters)
- Clothing – moisture-wicking layers, insulation, waterproof shell, trail shoes
- Shelter & sleep – ultralight tent or bivy, sleeping pad, bag or quilt
- Food & fuel – simple meals, high-calorie snacks, stove and fuel if needed
- Safety & repair – first aid kit, bike or gear repair kit, multi-tool, headlamp
How to Choose the Right Bags
- For bikepacking: use handlebar rolls, seat packs, and frame bags from brands like Revelate Designs or Ortlieb.
- For backpacking: aim for a 40–65L pack depending on trip length (Osprey, Gregory, and Deuter are great choices).
- For travel or hut-to-hut adventures: consider hybrid duffels or daypacks that can double as trail bags.
Pack With Intention
Think in systems:
- Sleep system
- Cook system
- Clothing system
- Ride/hike essentials
Lay everything out first, then remove 10–20%. You likely won’t miss it.
And remember: multipurpose gear is your friend. A bandana can be a towel, sun shield, or coffee filter. A puffy jacket can be your pillow. Every ounce adds up—make it count.
