Some quick thoughts for your week:

The Monk Who Sold His Ferrari.

I find that almost every season has been commandeered: Spring to cleaning and living up to New Year resolutions – Summer to vacations, travel, goals and the likes, and Winter to the tedium of the holidays and all the pressure, loneliness and consumerism that entails.

Glorious Fall seems to be the best time when conditions, and circumstances create the best opportunity to rest and be thankful. Fall is dear to me, because it was the start of my foray into the outdoors – driving on I-68W towards Sidling Hill, the vista was so beautiful I pulled over in awe. That day I fell in love with the Outdoors.

It’s so easy to chase all that my seem important, thankfully, there is no better release than a crisp fall morning, with the whistling breeze, and Kaleidoscope of colors drawing gratitude from our hearts for the privilege to experience such beauty, despite what problems await.
For that, for you and much more I am grateful.

Experience Fall From Your Car

We are all about getting outside and doing stuff – the more human-powered, the better. However, sometimes, its quite a treat to experience life at a barely faster pace from your car. It brings about memories of childhood, sitting in the backseat, and your mind actively establishing some of the core elements that define you today.

Here are five scenic road trips around Cumberland, Western Maryland, perfect for enjoying fall foliage:

1. Historic National Road (US-40)

  • Length: 170 miles (from Cumberland to Baltimore, MD)
  • Description: As America’s first federally funded highway, this route offers rolling hills, mountain views, and historic towns. The stretch from Cumberland through Frostburg and down towards Grantsville provides stunning views of vibrant fall foliage against the Appalachian Mountains.

2. Savage River Road

  • Length: 25 miles (round trip)
  • Description: This scenic drive winds through the Savage River State Forest, just outside of Cumberland. It offers dense forests ablaze with autumn colors, with plenty of opportunities for hiking and wildlife spotting. The quiet, forested roads make for a peaceful fall getaway.

3. Mountain Maryland Scenic Byway

  • Length: 193 miles (from Keyser’s Ridge to Oakland and back through Cumberland)
  • Description: Following parts of US-40 and US-219, this byway takes you through the Allegheny Mountains and Deep Creek Lake area. The route provides sweeping views of vibrant red, orange, and yellow trees, especially around Deep Creek Lake.

4. Green Ridge State Forest Drive

  • Length: 45 miles (loop)
  • Description: Located east of Cumberland, this scenic loop through Maryland’s largest state forest takes you through rugged hills and overlooks, including the popular Point Lookout. It’s perfect for those seeking isolation and vivid fall colors in a natural setting.

5. C&O Canal Scenic Drive

  • Length: 20-30 miles (depending on section)
  • Description: Travel along the Potomac River from Cumberland to Hancock via the C&O Canal Towpath. This relaxing drive showcases riverside foliage, cliffs, and historic canal structures. The leaves along the riverbanks and in nearby forests create a beautiful reflection of colors on the water.

Each route provides a unique perspective of the stunning autumn colors in Western Maryland, especially around the Appalachian Mountains. Some other recommendations.

The downtown is looking great, with the opening ceremony scheduled for November 14th. It has been a very difficult construction period, but we have remained open and excited about the new looks.
