What type of bike should I rent?

Several factors go into choosing a bike. This article will help you decide:

https://www.wheelzupadventures.com/choosing-bike/

What sizes do your bikes come in?

Our bikes range from XS to XL. Some models range from 49cm to 61cm. Some models also come in a step-through (low-step) frame.

How far can an e-bike go on one charge?

Under ideal conditions (flat terrain, 160 lb rider), pedal assist reaches its maximum range of 60 miles. With hills and higher assist levels (PAS 3–5), a practical range is usually 25–40 miles.

On the GAP and C&O at pedal assist level 1, we find you should get 45–50 miles.

What comes with my rental bike?

Every rental comes with a rear rack, a handlebar bag with a front light, bottle cages, a lock, and a repair kit (spare tube, patch kit, tire levers and pump). E-bikes also come with a charger.

Panniers are not included; see 'Can I rent panniers?'

Can I start or end my rental in Pittsburgh or DC?

Yes. We partner with bike shops in Pittsburgh and Washington DC that sit on the trail or about 5 minutes from the trailhead. If you start in either city, you pick up your bike and get fitted at our partner shop. If you finish in either city, you return your bike there. We send the shop's address, hours and directions with your reservation confirmation.

What does it cost?

We bring your rental bikes from Cumberland to the partner shop, or collect them from it, for $250 per city, covering up to 4 bikes. Each additional bike is $40.

- Start in Pittsburgh, finish in Cumberland: $250
- Start in Cumberland, finish in DC: $250
- Start in Pittsburgh, finish in DC: $500 ($250 for each city)
- Example: 6 bikes starting in Pittsburgh: $330 ($250 + 2 x $40)

This fee is added to your bike rental price. Your rental days start on the day your bikes are ready for you at the partner shop. This service runs until mid-November, when our partner shops close for the season.

Can I use my own pedals?

All bikes come with standard pedals. You can bring your own and we will install them for you at no extra charge.

Can I bring my own saddle?

Absolutely. We can swap in your saddle. Bring only the saddle, not the seatpost, because your seatpost may be a different diameter from ours.

Can I rent panniers?

Panniers are not included with any rental. You can rent a set of waterproof Ortlieb Back-Roller Classic panniers for $8 per day: two 20L bags, 40L total. Add them when you book, or ask at pickup. You can also bring your own; they fit our rear racks.

What happens if I have a mechanical problem?

Every bike comes with an emergency kit for basic repairs. Most riders can manage and get to the next town for help.

If that's not possible, contact the shop. We will either send help from one of our many partners along the trail, or come find you and give you a replacement bike so you can continue your adventure.

Do you rent outdoor equipment?

Yes. We rent backpacking gear, including Osprey and Mountainsmith backpacks, tents, stoves, sleeping pads and more. We also rent bike racks and cargo boxes.

Get more information on our Rental page.

Do you have parking at your shop?

Yes. There is short- and long-term parking within a 45-second walk of our Canal Place shop. Both lots are currently free and safe.

Short-term parking: 13 Canal Street, Cumberland MD 21502 (opposite the train station)
Long-term parking: 15 Howard Street, Cumberland MD 21502 (under the interstate bridge, opposite the shop)

What is your cancellation and change policy?

We hold vehicles, drivers and bikes for you and turn other riders away, so late changes are hard for us to fill. One policy covers every Wheelzup service.

  • 31 or more days before your trip: full refund minus the $50 reservation fee. Date changes are free.
  • 4 to 30 days: we keep half the trip price. If you've only paid your 50% deposit, that's your deposit; if you've paid in full, you get half back.
  • 3 days or less, or no-show: no refund.

14 days before your trip, your balance is due and your booking locks. After that, fewer riders or bikes can still come, but there's no refund for anyone who drops out. We cannot add riders or bikes, or change vehicles, bike types or dates. Bike size changes depend on what we have in stock.

Example: a $320 shuttle on June 15. Cancel by May 15: $270 back. Cancel May 16 to June 11: $160 back. After June 11: no refund.

The policy shown when you book is the one that applies to your booking.

Read our full Cancellation and Change Policy

Where do we pick up and drop off the bikes?

Pick up and drop off bikes and equipment at our shop at Canal Place. We are also happy to meet you at your Airbnb, hotel or another location.

You must be fitted properly before your trip, so arrange this with us and confirm it when you receive your reservation notice.

Is there an age limit, and what do I need to bring?

There is no minimum age. Riders under 16 must ride with an adult for the whole rental. The person renting must show a photo ID at pickup. Each rider must be within the weight limit the manufacturer sets for the bike they rent; ask us and we'll tell you the limit for your bike. Your confirmation email has a link to sign the waiver online, or you can sign it at pickup. Every rider signs before riding.

Do you offer a season pass?

Yes. The season pass is focused on day-use rentals. For a very low price, you get unlimited use of our bikes and watersport equipment (Rocky Gap location) for 12 months.

You also get 5 two-hour guest passes and a discount on all our paid events while your pass is valid.

Do you provide helmets?

Yes, helmets are free on request. Let us know when you book.

Do you have bike storage?

Yes. Our secure bike lockers are $15 per night, and each holds 2 bikes comfortably. Ask when you book or stop in at the shop.
