Shuttle FAQ
What is the cost of the shuttle?
Our shuttle prices are very competitive and depend on your destination and the number of passengers. The base price covers up to 2 passengers, their bikes and the belongings they bring. The price is the same for 1 or 2 riders. We add $20 for each additional passenger over 2.
Pricing and schedule availability can be accessed Here.
How soon do I need to reserve a shuttle?
Book as soon as your plans are set. The busiest times on the trail are May/June and September/October. Availability is limited on those dates, so the sooner you book, the more secure your ride.
See 'What is your cancellation and change policy?' below.
Pricing and schedule availability can be accessed Here.
Is there a set time for the shuttle?
Most of our shuttles are set to your schedule. We have limited shared rides.
Shuttles run as early as 8am and as late as 5pm (for a limited number of routes).
Because we are based in Cumberland, the latest we prefer to leave for Pittsburgh or DC is 3pm. We are happy to work with you, so if a later time suits your schedule, contact us.
Where do we get picked up for the shuttle?
The easiest pickup spot is our shop at Canal Place. We are also happy to pick you up at your Airbnb, hotel, home or any custom location within 10 miles of the trailhead. Arrange this with us and confirm it when you receive your reservation notice.
What type of vehicle is the shuttle?
We use 12- and 15-passenger Ford Transit vans and 6-passenger minivans. For groups with more than 7 bikes, we use a trailer, which adds a $75 surcharge.
Do you shuttle e-bikes?
How do you transport customer bikes?
When no trailer is needed, we carry bikes on Kuat NV racks. These tray racks clamp onto the tires, which keeps your bike secure and avoids scratches or damage to the rest of the bike.
Sometimes we use both the rack and the inside of the van to avoid needing a trailer. We are committed to keeping passengers, bikes and luggage safe and damage-free.
How do you shuttle large groups?
To date, we have shuttled groups as large as 50 riders. Groups with more than 7 bikes usually need a trailer. There is a $75 additional charge if we need to pull a trailer for a group.
Do you shuttle recumbents, trikes and tandems?
Yes. We shuttle regular bikes, tandems, trikes and recumbents, and we have not yet found a bike we could not transport safely. If your group or bike needs a trailer, there is a $75 trailer charge. We do not rent or sell recumbents.
What do you need to know about my e-bike?
When you book, tell us the make, model and weight of each e-bike, and whether its tires are wider than 3 inches. This helps us bring the right rack or trailer. See 'Do you shuttle e-bikes?' for pricing.
Where do you drop off or pick up in Pittsburgh?
We drop off and pick up anywhere within a 10-mile radius of Point State Park, as long as it is close to downtown. The only exception is if the ride requires us to pull a trailer. Please give us your pickup and drop-off locations when you book.
It is usually best to ride down to Point State Park and meet us there.
Where do you drop off or pick up in Washington DC?
We drop off and pick up at Thompson Boat Center in Georgetown, next to Mile 0 of the C&O (2900 Virginia Ave NW, Washington, DC 20037). We can sometimes use other locations, but traffic and other factors usually make this difficult.
If you want a different location, contact the shop directly to confirm. Additional costs may apply.
Do you transfer luggage?
Yes. We transfer up to 2 pieces of luggage per rider, with a weight limit of 40 lb or less.
The standard price is $500 for a transfer of up to 4 pieces of luggage on the GAP (standard itinerary), and $550 for the standard 4-day itinerary on the C&O.
If your plans are different, we are happy to make other arrangements (fees may apply). Call or send us a message for help.
Do you have parking at your shop?
Yes. There is short- and long-term parking within a 45-second walk of our Canal Place shop. Both lots are currently free and safe.
Short-term parking: 13 Canal Street, Cumberland MD 21502 (opposite the train station)
Long-term parking: 15 Howard Street, Cumberland MD 21502 (under the interstate bridge, opposite the shop)
What direction do most people ride?
It depends on a few things. We generally advise finishing your ride at your car. That way you don't finish a 40-mile day and then wait for a shuttle or face a long ride back to your car.
Parking in Cumberland is always a good option: it's free, there's no traffic, and it's easy in and out. On your last day, you also get to enjoy 25 mostly downhill miles from Deal to Cumberland.
If you live closer to Pittsburgh, it may make more sense to finish in Pittsburgh and have a shorter drive home. Either way has its benefits.
What is your cancellation and change policy?
We hold vehicles, drivers and bikes for you and turn other riders away, so late changes are hard for us to fill. One policy covers every Wheelzup service.
- 31 or more days before your trip: full refund minus the $50 reservation fee. Date changes are free.
- 4 to 30 days: we keep half the trip price. If you've only paid your 50% deposit, that's your deposit; if you've paid in full, you get half back.
- 3 days or less, or no-show: no refund.
14 days before your trip, your balance is due and your booking locks. After that, fewer riders or bikes can still come, but there's no refund for anyone who drops out. We cannot add riders or bikes, or change vehicles, bike types or dates. Bike size changes depend on what we have in stock.
Example: a $320 shuttle on June 15. Cancel by May 15: $270 back. Cancel May 16 to June 11: $160 back. After June 11: no refund.
The policy shown when you book is the one that applies to your booking.
How do I know you have not forgotten about me?
You will get a confirmation email when you book, a reminder email 2 days before your appointment, and another a few hours before it. You can also always contact the shop directly to confirm.
